I think you'll find the term "shrink" is a refernce to head-shrinkers not shrinking the problem, and psychology has hardly been a humane way of studying the psyche. Think mental institutions, lobotomy, shock treatment, eugenics, straight-jackets and shackles, experiments like those performed by Nazis, and even now the prescribing of tranquillizers and anti-depressents to people, many of whom have then suffered serious side effects which have led to suicide, murder/suicide, self-harm, hallucinations, death... The people involved in this profession tend to be deeply troubled individuals who, failing to sort themselves out, have then gone on to project their problems onto others (think Freud). Psychology and psychiatry have a shameful history and I think modern approaches using drugs will be added to this list as time goes by.
